JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) has been the dominant format for photographic images since the early 1990s. Its lossy compression algorithm makes it exceptionally efficient at storing complex photographic content — reducing file sizes by 10× or more compared to uncompressed images, with quality levels adjustable from imperceptible to high compression.

JPEG excels at photographic content with continuous tones and gradients. However, it struggles with sharp edges, text, and flat-color graphics — where its block-based DCT compression introduces visible artifacts. JPEG also has two critical limitations: no support for alpha transparency, and no lossless mode (every save involves quality loss).

These limitations make JPEG unsuitable for logos, user interface graphics, screenshots, or any image that will be edited and re-saved multiple times. For these use cases, converting from JPG to PNG is the right move.

PNG's lossless compression preserves every pixel exactly as-is. This is critical when you need to edit and re-save an image — JPEG degrades with every re-save ("generation loss"), while PNG never does. For logos, UI mockups, screenshots, and design assets, PNG is the superior format.

PNG also supports full alpha transparency, which JPEG does not. If you need to remove a background from an image, overlay graphics, or create a logo with a transparent background, converting from JPG to PNG gives you a format that supports these operations natively.

When using design tools like Figma, Photoshop, Sketch, or GIMP, PNG is preferred for imported assets because it guarantees pixel-perfect reproduction. Many design workflows start with a JPG source image and require a PNG conversion before editing begins.
